Plastic-free Month. Challenge? Yes! Possible?…Will see :/

I am following SophiaBush on Twitter (for anyone who isn’t pleease follow her because she’s bringing some interesting and very productive tweets to the table – @SophiaBush ), so one of her tweets was about a challenge that I really liked. The idea is to go through an entire month without using plastic. The initiative is called Plastic-Free February and here you can find more info. I thought it was worth trying, so today was my first plastic-free day…or so I though! My first day in the challenge isn’t even officially over and I’m already struggling, which doesn’t mean I’m gonna give up. Noo sir! I’m just saying that it turns out to be more difficult than I thought. Today, for example, I decided to do some shopping, so I immediately connected the word shopping with lots of plastic bags. Naturally, I decided that I’m not gonna allow that, so I took a cloth bag to put the groceries in. Easy enough! Next move, I go to the supermarket. Every time I pick something from the shelves the lady prepares a nylon bag for me, so finally I lift my bag up to my face and I smile as if saying “Lady, I have my own bag!”. So she gave up eventually 🙂 So far so good. Then, however, I go home and I start putting everything to its place and it suddenly hit me – I am surrounded with plastic! Everywhere I turn! Now that I’m on a mission I start noticing this things and honestly it looks hopeless. The yoghurt, the eggs (sometimes), the milk(sometimes), everything sweet that you buy, every ready-made or half-cooked food – it all comes in a plastic box/wrapping. If we have to avoid everything in plastic that means we have to avoid buying anything at all which is impossible, so this is kind of the concept that I can’t really wrap my head around, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna stop trying even if that means buying from the village people who give the eggs straight from the chicken’s nest or the milk directly from the cow. At east that’ll help the local production 🙂 I wish brands would stop putting their products (food or cosmetics) in plastic boxes or wrappings and just start using more eco-friendly ways. For example, how come some brands put their eggs in a carton, but others can’t? Or why is it that we find milk in carton boxes, but we also have it in plastic ones too? We can totally do without the plastic version of everything, trust me. But the sad thing is that sometimes people are forced to use them because there’s nothing else. Anyway, I’m gonna keep trying to get through this month and more even without the help of plastic, thank you very much! And even though I said it looks hopeless, it doesn’t have to be. We can all try to reduce our plastic use bit by bit. Even if we come to a situation where is life-threatening to use it then i guess it’s allowed 🙂 xaxax But the point is to try to avoid it when we can, like refusing the plastic bags in the supermarket because you have your own cloth bag, or choosing brands that use carton or anything BUT plastic and so on. There definitely are ways and if you brainstorm a bit you will think of many creative ways to be green and still live a normal life 🙂

Much love 🙂

P.S. Again, add SophiaBush in Twitter, oh, and mr IanSomerhalder. Those guys are amazing, I;m telling you. They really do care about the environment and about other things besides their fame 🙂 And then if you’re on a Twitter-adding spree you can add me as well @Tolinka 🙂

10.10.10 Global day of doing

Tomorrow is an extraordinary date and we can all do something to make it even more special. Tomorrow is also the Global Day of Doing all over the world. Millions of people and organizations will be gathering to celebrate this day and everyone will be taking some steps to cut their emissions, cut carbon and send a powerful message to world leaders that people everywhere are ready to tackle climate change. Have you decided how to make a positive impact on this unique date? If the answer is “YES” then good for you! We are all very proud of you! If your answer is “NO”, don’t take it too hard on yourself. You still have plenty of time to plan your day tomorrow so that it is as environment-friendly as possible. Whether you choose not to drive your car and ride a bicycle instead, or prepare yourself a low carbon meal or even plant a tree, it is all up to you, just make it green, do it for our beautiful world and most of all – have fun! If you need some inspirational ideas for the big day tomorrow visit the official Global Day of Doing website at http://www.1010global.org/101010

I live in Bulgaria and I plan to do the following:

1. I am not driving my car tomorrow but walking instead (burn some calories as a bonus 🙂 )

2. Share a low carbon meal with friends

3. Attend the gathering

at the National Palace of Culture (Sofia) where WWF Bulgaria in association with “Coalition for the climate” are organizing a great event. Citizens with gather to write the number 350 which symbolizes the immediate actions that need to be taken to stabilize the climate. Countries all over the world are going to mark this day with some event. Google to see what your country is doing and what events you can be a part of. 🙂 Have a great day and if you have pictures, post them afterwards. Spread the love!

Green love,

GoodSearch – search the internet and raise money at the same time :)

I just heard about a way we can raise money while we do our searches on the internet and it sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Here’s what they say on their site:

“Last year search engines generated close to $8 billion in revenue from advertisers. We’ve developed a way to direct some of that money to the causes you care about most. It’s easy … every time you search the Internet at GoodSearch.com, your charity or school earns money and the more you search, the more they make. Add up the money generated from all your searches and those done by the millions of other people who we hope will use GoodSearch, and we can make a real difference to the people and causes that need funds most.”

Sound’s great, doesn’t it? I know you’re nodding right now 🙂

So, here’s what they need you to do:

  • On the GoodSearch homepage, choose from thousands of organizations or add your favorite cause to our list.
  • Search the Internet just like you normally would — the site is powered by Yahoo!, so you’ll get high-quality search results.
  • Fifty percent of the revenue generated from the sponsored search advertisers is shared with the charity, school or nonprofit organization of your choosing.

GoodSearch: You Search...We Give!

Thank you for your support! 🙂 Now go and tell others about it – you can blog it, badge it, email it, tweet etc. The site gives you great options to help you share, so do it 🙂

Any old shoes or clothes? Yes, please!

I am currently in Dubai visiting my mom and having a wonderful time. The other day, we were on our way home when we came across something that i haven’t seen back home. Maybe it’s nothing new to most of you, but for me it was. It was a bin that looked a lot like any ordinary Reuse & Recycle litter-bin but this one was intended for clothes, shoes, sheets and pretty much anything of this sort that is in good condition. I was really impressed with the idea. Here the traditional wear for locals is abayas for women and candoras for men, so they encourage people to give those when they’re of no use anymore for recycling and later on maybe donating to people in need. That’s wonderful, in my opinion! Before, you could rarely see a begger wandering the streets of Dubai and, quite frankly, it always struck me as a bit odd. In Bulgaria you see those people literally on every corner, but here it was like they tried their best to preserve an image of a place where it’s all about lux, good-life and all that. Well, not anymore! Now here is just as bad as everywhere else if not even worse. People are broke, some of them barely meeting the ends. Yes, it’s still all about the luxurious life but fewer and fewer can actually afford it. So, my point here is that it is times like this when people have to help each other. That clothes-bins are a very good way to do that and do it in a environment-friendly way. 🙂

It was raining cats and dogs!!!

Wow… You wouldn’t believe the rain that came pouring down from the sky today! I actually wish the rain was the biggest problem. Hail with the size of a walnut hit the streets hard in the afternoon hours while everyone was out. I feel pity for the cars! You can’t imagine the sound when the hail hit them. At one point I started waiting for the windows to start breaking… But it was quite funny, though! My sister and I were out because we were looking for an apartment. So, we were just saying Bye to the broker when a lightning almost blinded us and then POWWW!!! Unnecessarily loud thunder! I said to my sister that we would need to get under one umbrella because mine was obviously broken. But the umbrella was quite small to fit both of us under it, so I decided to make a run for the car (which was 3 blocks away xaxxa). There were 3 guys waiting for the rain to stop in front of a supermarket, clearly enjoying the view, meaning myself, running completely soaked. I even think at some point my pants became really heavy and started falling down. xaxaxax I would’ve laughed at the sight of myself, as well! xaaxxax
But on a more serious note… that was some hail! Check out those pics taken earlier today:

Rolling Stone Magazine

Yesterday i joined the SocialVibe Street team, where i commit myself to helping promote the site, the purpose and everything…The way i earn points and move up in rank is by completing orders given by the team leader. So, one of my orders was to get in contact with the editors of the Rolling Stone Magazine. I just wrote them to explain why they have to be a part of the SocialVibe team. I asked them if they could write an article about the site because that would help a lot. I also wrote to the Bulgarian Rolling Stone magazine telling them the same thing. I hope I’ll get a response in the next few days, at least from the local magazine. Keep your fingers crossed, people! A possible article by one of the best selling magazines in the world would be a big deal for SocialVibe!
